The Family Session Prep Guide
I am so excited to capture you and your family. I love Lifestyle Photography Sessions because they are uniquely designed to not only capture what you look like at a certain point in time, but it captures who you are naturally as individuals. My goal is to capture lightly posed, natural photos of your family and children. Yes, I will capture shots with everyone looking at the camera, but I also like to capture the true essence of your family as well. My photography style can be described as natural, classic and romantic.
Do not worry about posing or feeling awkward in-front of the camera because I will guide you and your family through the entire process. I do not provide the use of props for my sessions, however if you have something in mind that you would like to bring, let me know. At the end of your session, you will have beautiful images that can be framed & hung in your home and passed down from generation to generation. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for your session with me.
Location: Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. I have some beautiful locations that I love to shoot at, but I am open to shooting in new locations. If you need help deciding on a location I can definitely give you suggestions based on your personality, style and attire.
Time: The images in my gallery look the way they do largely because of my use of light. The time of day your session takes place has a huge impact. Since we will be shooting outdoors, we will shoot either in the morning or in the evening. The light is typically too harsh mid day (unless there is an overcast or we are shooting at a nature park/location with tall buildings). The typical times for shoots will either be around 2 hours after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset. If your children are up for it, shooting one to two hours before sunset provides the most gorgeous light and atmosphere! Many families will simply have the kids take a late nap or have some down time prior to their evening session.
Length of Session: Based on your collection choice, your session will be 30 minutes - 1 hour. During your session time, I will get a diverse and adequate gallery in that time which includes whole family together as well as individualized groupings.
Your wardrobe should be flattering, comfortable and reflect your personal style. If you love to dress up, choose dressy attire. If you love a more causal look, choose causal attire that works for you. I do not recommend matching, but rather coordinating. The examples below will give you an idea of what I am talking about. I am happy to consult you directly on wardrobe. Just let me know.
Remember that children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we just give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. Do not worry if your child is running about and being active, I will still capture photos of your child being him/herself.
To get the posed family shots, I usually have the adults to simply look at me while I get the child’s attention. You do not have to worry about getting your child to smile - I will handle that for you.
To get the most out of your session, make sure that your little one has rested and has had adequate snacks and water. If you are investing in an hour session, I recommend you bring a little snack for your child just in case they get tired or fussy. When bringing snacks, be sure to bring dry, non messy snacks so their little faces will stay clean during the session.
Prepare the child for the session by letting them know that a “friend" will be taking some photos of them, it is best not to surprise them.
Please arrive on time or be ready to start on time. Remember, your session is scheduled according to light. It is important that we start on time. Please plan for traffic or parking constraints. It is best to arrive early.
Within 2-3 weeks of your session, you will receive a private gallery for downloading and ordering professional prints & products. All professional prints and products will be shipped directly to you.
